the fiber guy

October 11, 2019

I used to care what materials I used–it seemed like, well, I was Fiber Guy, because that’s what I used.

One of the reasons that I used fiber is because it’s an efficient material. It’s efficient, from an artistic standpoint. For instance, you get a lot of bang for your buck with a little line of fiber. It makes a big impact, starts carving up space, it reflects light, it can have color.  And all it is is a piece of fiber that comes in spools, right? So it’s efficient for making art, to start forming space or doing things. It also can be efficient from a cost standpoint too. Just from a kind of economy of using something to make an impact visually.

But at some point, I stopped–I said, well, I’m not the Fiber Guy. First of all, I’m not the only guy that used fiber.  There’s a whole tradition of fiber. And not just traditional fibers. Fibers used three-dimensionally–there are many people that use it, that have used it.  Just like there are many people that have used oil paints. So I think over the last–I don’t know how many years–I have been more open to that, and I realize that it’s not really the material so much as it is kind of my sensibility, or the vision behind it.  I have no problem not using cable or fiber.
