Description:
Stacks is inspired by the idea that a library as an open framework where information, ideas, and people are coming and going. The sculpture consists of a simple open volume inhabited by plates of different sizes and colors. Like books on a shelf, these page-like plates create a lively and varied composition that takes on more and less transparent qualities depending on one’s viewpoint. From a distance, the sculpture’s form mimics the library’s architecture. From below, the plates recall a perspective looking down the book stacks within the building. Designed to be interchangeable, the plates are printed with texts and quotes selected by librarians from the library’s collection.
