Description:
Filling the Void, originally funded by the inaugural McKnight Mid-Career Public Grant, was a changeable framework intended to evolve and develop with the changing population and resident artists at Youthlink, a multi-resource non-profit center serving youth experiencing homelessness. When Youthlink announced plans to expand its facility to accommodate temporary apartments and a modernized resource center, it was only natural that the original art installation would evolve along with the building. Filling the Void II, using the same scaffold-like vocabulary as the original artwork, took form in two distinct sculptures placed in different sites within the landscape plan. A tall blue tower located at the main entry echoes Youthlink’s new apartment complex and echoes the Minneapolis skyline beyond. A smaller green volume occupies a small garden to the east. Both sculptures are woven three-dimensionally from within with the same colorful acrylic fiber used on the original installation.
