studio objects: saw blade

January 8, 2021

This is part of an occasional series about objects that live in my studio.

This is another early piece. I was always looking for things to wrap or weave that had some kind of hidden three-dimensional shape that was waiting to be revealed.  So that’s a bow saw.

I was very interested in saw blades, because they were a natural way to organize thread, the little notches. So to get it into a three-dimensional form, I used a threaded rod and drilled it through the handle and then I just began to thread up and down the rod and up down the blade, gradually working my way outwards to see what would happen.

I did a number of saw blades, probably four.  This one wasn’t really a finished piece.  This was more of an experiment.

There was a huge one like that that went on the wall, like seven feet long.  Here’s a picture of it.  It’s actually sold.  Somebody on the east coast now owns it, but it’s the same idea.
