studio objects: ark
June 12, 2020
This is part of an occasional series about objects that live in my studio.
I like this. It’s called “Ark,” like Noah’s ark. It started with the model for a garden shed that I did for a client in Ohio. But then I found this piece of wood, I don’t know what it is, I have no idea, but the model seemed to fit perfectly in this spot, so then I just turned it into this art piece.
And then I started adding all this stuff, embedding images into the ark, with little magnifying lenses. And if you look in there, you can see, there’s old pictures, photos in there. Quirks, shells, statistics on water, all kinds of stuff.
And there’s like a measuring, like the sea is rising. I really don’t know what in the world it is. It looked like an ark, the angle, the way it’s in the water to me.
I probably should do more playing like this. I try to build that into the process, you know? I do that more consciously now.
